I am a lifelong fan of the Milton Cross book "Complete Stories of the Great Operas" - a wonderful book, but in many respects Simon's book is better. More conversational, a bit more current, more readable, more concise on the synopsis, and a bit more background information. Both books are quite dated/5(61). It explores in depth and detail both the famous and not-so-famous Verdi operas, as well as his one great concert work, the Requiem Mass of ; his early songs; and his very last composition, a setting of the Stabat Mater. You trace his development from a more or less conventional composer of operas in the traditional Italian bel canto.

An invaluable guide for both casual opera fans and aficionados, Great Operas is perhaps the most comprehensive and enjoyable volume of opera stories ever written. From La Traviata to Aïda, from Carmen to Don Giovanni, here are the plots of the world's best-loved operas, told in an engaging, picturesque, and readable n by noted opera authority Henry W. Simon, this distinctive. Even operas I have seen over and over merit a review before attending a performance and this book gives a great review. In addition to a good synopsis of the plot, the book gives interesting facts and histories of the operas covered.5/5(5).

This work has a double object. Every great opera has a two-fold character; the two component parts are supreme music and supreme romance. The aim of this work is to tell the stories accompanied by a descriptive analysis of the music. The point of view assumed is that of the ordinary music lover who, though an ardent follower of opera, has neither time, nor opportunity, nor aptitude, to study. The stories of the great operas with music / edited by Ernest Newman and Sir Landon Ronald [complete in 4 volumes] by Newman, Ernest () Edition: First Edition Book condition: Very good copy in the original gilt-blocked, 1/2 burgundy leather over cloth. Gilt-decorated spine compartments. Spine bands and Book Description.
